Liars & Turkish Beauties

Sarah Lotz is not only a brilliant writer, but a terrific encourager and comfort too (way better than gin), and cheered me immeasurably the other day when she (even with her great success and many international deals brewing) said she also finds writing and publishing a crazy up-and-down thing. Grand highs, lavish lows, and so impossible not to love, especially for those with addictive personalities. One day your heart sinks from a rejection (like on Thursday, I got one from Asimov’s magazine for a sci-fi story, which, in spite of this rejection, I have not given up on), and the next there is good news, like that Four Drunk Beauties being taken up by a Turkish publisher for translation, and after Thursday’s rejection, I heard on Friday that another speculative short story was selected for a reading by the Liar’s League in London.

Short Story night at the Phoenix could be fun, so why not check it out if you happen to be in London on Tuesday 8th March.

Lavish lows make way for this hectic high! Excellent news, Alex.

That's nice of you Ben, Liesl, Fiona and Tiah. Liesl, thank you for that 'hectic high', but I'm suspecting most probably not too hectic (and that's certainly a plus as far as normal good mornings of coffee and croissants go) - it's not as sexy as it sounds, like everything, but a happy surprise nevertheless. [I'm never sure how wise it is to say anything in non-fiction environments (like this), so with some trepidation, I add on the sexiness of things, that my policy is to believe no more than sixty-three percent, no matter the source, anything read, seen or heard. That's a 37 percent illusion, error, exaggeration, willful ommissioning or snake-oiling misrepresentation margin - perhaps I'm too much of an optimist?]

Yay for you, Alex! Terrific news and more than well-deserved.
(Thank you for the lovely and undeserved compliment - I can only assume there is another brilliant and successful Sarah Lotz who is not horribly in debt, perhaps living in another dimension). xx

ha! skanky illusion marring the truth again - you are brilliant and successful and one day, hopefully soon, you won't be in debt anymore because one (at least) of the books is going to be a bestseller of literary acclaim.

    Story trumps everything.

Dear Alex, you made my day with this post, with a lovely nod to the power of encouragement, and your two grand bits of news. Courage and congratulations!
